Design and delivery of a terrestrial protected area management training course.
Description of project:
The effective management of protected area systems relies heavily on the people and institutions who manage them and so supporting key staff to build their capacities and share experiences across the region is key to improving protected area development. During January – July, 2015, CANARI designed and facilitated a 5-day training course for terrestrial protected area (PA) managers in the Caribbean region in coordination with and through support from the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA). The project aimed to improve the professional development of the region’s PA personnel and expand the network of PA professionals involved in biodiversity conservation and PA management within the Caribbean countries of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of countries.
The protected areas component of BIOPAMA is implemented jointly by IUCN and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC) and is an initiative of the ACP Secretariat financed by the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) of the European Union.
Highlights:
On July 6-10, 2015, 27 participants from 11 Caribbean countries (Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago) participated in a five-day training course on terrestrial protected area (PA) management held in Trinidad and Tobago. Participants were from government agencies and civil society organisations with mandates for and active engagement in terrestrial PA management. See report of the training course here.
Key activities and results:
- A training course programme for terrestrial protected area management in the Caribbean region was designed and course content developed for three core topics including:
- Engaging stakeholders and developing partnerships for protected area management;
- Participatory protected area design and management planning; and
- Developing sustainable livelihoods.
- CANARI facilitated a five-day training course on terrestrial protected area management during 6-10 July, 2015 held in Trinidad and Tobago in coordination with IUCN BIOPAMA for 27 participants from 11 Caribbean countries. Participants build their capacity in how to:
- effectively engage stakeholders in the overall process of protected area (PA) planning and management including through conducting stakeholder identification and stakeholder analysis processes, effectively mobilising different types of stakeholders, and creating mechanisms for effective and equitable participation, particularly of marginalised groups;
- design a participatory management planning process for a protected area including how to undertake capacity needs assessments for the protected area management institution; and
- develop and support sustainable livelihoods in communities adjacent to protected areas to support management and conservation of biodiversity.
