Exploring the Caribbean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot

Our Caribbean region is a biodiversity-rich archipelago with unique habitats and high species diversity. Despite their small land area, the islands support a high proportion of globally threatened species: 62% of Caribbean species are found nowhere else on earth and of the approximately 11,000 described plant species, 72% are thought to be restricted to a single island.

Our exceptionally diverse ecosystems, ranging from montane cloud forests to cactus scrublands, support the well-being of more than 38 million people, including by providing water and food, regulating air and soil quality and reducing disaster risk.

Check out the infographic below for facts and figures about the Caribbean and its biodiversity!
