Description of the project:
From July 2018-May 2019, CANARI is providing technical assistance to the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Sustainable Development and Information Technology for the ‘Development of a Climate Change Policy, Strategy and Implementation Plan’. This technical assistance project is one component of the Organisation for Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Regional Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project which aims to reduce vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change. Project Objective:
Mainstreaming climate change resilience into development planning in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) through the development of a National Climate Change Policy, Strategy and Implementation Plan.
Key activities and outputs:
- Preparation of an Issues Paper aimed at synthesising the policy context, gaps and needs, opportunities and challenges for SVG in addressing climate change to serve as the basis for discussions and analysis in stakeholder consultations.
- Facilitation of a series of stakeholder consultations across SVG in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Sustainable Development and Information Technology, including national workshops, targeted interviews and online consultations/virtual meetings, to enable input from the government, civil society and private sector into the Climate Change Policy, Strategy and Implementation Plan.
- Development of a Climate Change Policy that provides overarching guidance on national priorities, measures for adaptation and mitigation and the institutional framework for climate change planning, implementation and financing.
- Development of a Climate Change Strategy and Implementation Plan, including a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan, to operationalise the Climate Change Policy.
- Provision of technical support to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Sustainable Development and Information Technology to facilitate the Cabinet’s review and approval of the new Climate Change Policy.
