The Caribbean Subgroup of the Latin American and Caribbean Forestry Commission suggested at its last meeting in Guatemala in 2010 that a Caribbean knowledge exchange initiative on Community Forestry be conducted. The idea is to gather and compare information on community forestry initiatives in the Caribbean through the preparation of case studies. The ultimate objective of this initiative is to prepare a summary of Caribbean experiences with community forestry, analyse the factors contributing to the success and problems of community forestry initiatives and present recommendations on how to design successful community forestry programmes.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) with financial support from the National Forest ProgrammeS (NFP) facility is supporting the Caribbean Subgroup of the Latin American and Caribbean Forestry Commission to implement a regional knowledge sharing initiative on Community Forestry practices in the Caribbean.
The case studies were presented and discussed at a regional conference in November 2011.
The main objective of the project is to facilitate a knowledge sharing imitative on community forestry practices in the Caribbean.
