CANARI regional conference on “Forests for People, People for Forests: Forest-based livelihoods in the Caribbean”

CANARI is hosting a regional Forest and Livelihoods conference from May 5th to7th, 2010 in Trinidad. The conference is by invitation only and will bring together 80 participants from government agencies, civil society organisations, academic institutions, private sector organisations, and donor and technical assistance agencies, involved in forest management working at local, national and regional levels in the English, French, Spanish, and Creole-speaking islands of the Caribbean.

The goal of the conference is for participants to share experiences and lessons learned so as to identify and promote policies and practices that support sustainable forest-based livelihoods in the islands of the Caribbean.

The conference promises a dynamic array of presenters who will speak on the following themes:
• Adaptive, collaborative, ecosystem-based approaches to forest management
• Potential uses of abandoned agricultural estates to develop forest-based livelihoods
• Forests for sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction
• Valuation of ecosystem services and its role in forest management
• Climate change and forests in small islands
